Safety

- All press operation must be conducted by foundry staff Template:Clear - All regular foundry PPE is required (safety glasses, green jacket, long pants, steel toe boots) Template:Clear - Anyone handling hot billets or dies should wear heat resistant gloves Template:Clear - All personnel must stand clear of the front of the press until breakout occurs Template:Clear - During press operation the adjacent room housing hydraulic components must be vacant and the blast shield on the door opposite the press must be used Template:Clear - Hazards including pinch and crush points, high temperatures Template:Clear

Preparation Considerations

- Press operation must be conducted by foundry staff, contacting prior to desired operation times and communication of desired extrusion parameters and any special considerations is key Template:Clear - The press container as well dies, billets and the clean out block need to be preheated prior to press use. Container preheating must be coordinated with foundry staff, other items can be placed in the foundry convection furnaces Template:Clear - Set up desired data collection, quenching apparatus and any other other additional task specific equipment in advance Template:Clear - To ensure a safe and effective workflow it can be useful to decide which team members will preform specific tasks during the extrusion. Tasks to consider are listed below, be sure to keep any tasks associated with task specific equipment in mind Template:Clear

                   1) operate the press door Template:Clear
                   2) transport billets Template:Clear
                   3) guiding the extrusion to the roller cart Template:Clear

Press Preparation

1) The roller cart should be positioned to receive the extrusion Template:Clear 2) The adjacent room behind the press houses the hydraulic components of the press, this room must be vacant while the press is in use Template:Clear 3) Dies must moved from the furnace to the tool stack by using tongs to hold the handle, the handle must then be removed with Allen wrench Template:Clear 4) Once the die is secured, the tool stack must be pushed back into place within the press Template:Clear 5) The angled tray should be placed at the end of the press in order to lift the extraction as it exits the press Template:Clear 6) Close the door to the room and cover with the blast shield Template:Clear

Extrusion

1) Run the clean out block as many times as the assisting staff deems necessary Template:Clear 2) Billets should be removed from the furnace and placed in the press using tongs, the door operator should open the door to allow access to the press and close it once the billet is situated within the machine Template:Clear 3) Once breakout is achieved and the profile beings to exit the press, tongs should be used to guide the extrusion to the roller cart, keeping the material as straight as possible Template:Clear 4) Repeat the previous two steps for each billet, stopping to cut the extrusion with a hand saw as necessary and labeling the material with a high temp marker as desired Template:Clear 5) When finished extruding, dies and extrusion should be left to cool sufficiently before handling and clean up Template:Clear 6) Various extrusion data can be collected form the connected computer via thumb drive if desired Template:Clear
